Il Pianta Maggio - the May Tree in Norcia

The May Tree - NorciaIl Pianta Maggio – literally meaning “the May tree” in Italian – is a characteristic representation of Norcia that reflects a pagan belief linked to land’s rhythms.

On the night between 30 April and 1 May of every year, in the little suburban hamlets of Ancarano and Campi, extremely tall poles made from tree trunks stripped of their bark are set up, with their tops crowned by a leafy branch (a phallic symbol).

This representation – very similar to the May Pole in other countries - was originally used to bode well for fields’ fertility, with the associated songs and typical dances still bringing cheer to villages today.
