Feast of Immaculate and Li Fauni in Norcia, Umbria.

Festival of Lu Favone of NorciaEvery year, on 9 December, bonfires of extremely tall piles of broom are lighted in various squares in Norcia.

Every district of the town offers music, food and wine to liven up the evening, warmed by the heat of the “great fire” (= “favone” in local dialect).

Christian tradition makes the feast originate in 1291, on the night when the Virgin Mary’s home in Nazareth was lifted into the sky by angels and taken to Loreto, on the banks of the Adriatic Sea, safe from the Ottoman infidels who had occupied the Holy Land. Huge bonfires were lit along the route to guide the divine couriers to where religious fervour was greatest.
