Once you have reached Norcia, in the Sibylline Mountains National Park you cannot lose the natural spectacle offered by the Castelluccio Plateau. Hidden among the Sibylline Mountain peaks is Europe’s largest karst plateau, a suggestive and magic place full of history.
The ascent reveals the crests of the mountains surrounding the Norcia Valley. After the long ascent the road slowly starts to go back down again. On your right you will find a lay-by; stop there and get out of your car. You will enjoy a magnificent view: from here on everything changes – “Welcome to another dimension!”.
In every season of the year the great plateau of Castelluccio renews its splendour: its colours change as do its scents and inhabitants. Its visitors come from many parts of the world, each with their own dreams and specific expectations.
Here in the prehistoric period there was once a great lake. Letting your imagination run free, you can conceive this entire area, 1,500 m (just over 4,921 ft.) above sea level, full of water and aquatic fauna.
This place is a paradise for those who want to practise outdoor sports like mountain biking, hang gliding, paragliding cross-country skiing, and trekking on foot or horseback. A place in which to lose one’s self to rediscover one’s equanimity, a place to be respected and conserved.
The world of TV also discovered the location many years ago and often uses these scenarios for breathtaking films, ads, and musical videos.
